A Guide to Summer Eye Care
It’s officially summer and it’s time to ensure you keep your eyes protected from the sun and other warm weather dangers.
Here are some pointers on staying safe in the sun:
-
Buy glasses with proper protection from UV rays. If your glasses don’t guard against 100% of UV rays, they may be causing more damage than benefit. Don’t worry, sufficient UV protection doesn’t mean a higher price – many reasonably priced products provide complete UV protection.
-
Choose larger sunglasses. When selecting sunglasses, think big. It’s advised to find a pair with wraparound frames and wide lenses.
-
Wear a wide protective hat. A wide brimmed hat will deflect the sun before it gets to your eyes.
-
Sport sunglasses on overcast days. Even when the sun doesn’t seem to be shining, harmful UV light is still able to penetrate the clouds and harm your eyes. Even when you can’t see the sun, it’s important to keep protected.
-
Have a spare pair of sunglasses. It’s always good to be ready for an accidental break or loss. Having a spare will keep you from being stranded without proper eye protection.
-
Drink enough. In order to ensure that you are hydrated, consume a minimum of 2 liters of water a day. Doing so will keep your eyes moist also.
-
Stay indoors during the heat of the day. Stay indoors as much as possible especially in the late morning and afternoon when the strength of the sun and ultraviolet radiation exposure are at a peak.
-
Consider purchasing polarized lenses. Since they reduce glare from reflective surfaces, polarized lenses are great for water-based activities and driving.
-
During outdoor activities such as riding a motorcycle, sitting by a campfire or camping, make sure you protect your eyes as necessary to avoid injury.
-
Be careful not to apply sunblock too close to the eyes as it can enter the eye and burn.
